GENRE | LOUD AND DISTURBED
VERDICT | ONE NOISY STEP FORWARD
LABEL | SUB POP RECORDS
RELEASE | 2.12.13

Punishing Allentown scuzz rockers Pissed Jeans exist in a loud, discordant vacuum, one where their dense, vitriolic brand of noise rock envelopes them like a sludgy cocoon and everything else keeps a safe distance.

Even when they take strides toward making themselves more palpable to the masses—as they do on their latest full-length Honeysthey’re still an angry, intense party of one. Where the band’s prior efforts, Hope For Men and King of Jeans, were oppressively jarring and occasionally unnerving, Honeys streamlines the band’s intensity into more conventional two- to three-minute sound bites. But the record still has its special way of relentlessly bludgeoning listeners into submission. “Bathroom Laughter” starts with a menacing bassline and uncoils into a violent mess of drum rolls, thick guitar, and Matt Korvette’s deranged, wild man howl.

And that’s as straightforward as its gets.

The lo-fi “Something About Mrs. Johnson” sounds like something stuck in a lawn mower blade, while the gloriously infantile “Cafeteria Food” trudges along slowly like Jonathan Richman on a Swans kick. The record might be the Jeans’s most polished offering to date,

but Honeys is proof that the band’s old cantankerous habits die hard.
